Fandis increases production and aims to enrich commercial offerings thanks to 3ntr 3D printers

Fandis is the Italian company specializing in shielding, management and temperature control systems in the industrial field, with ISO 9001:2015 certification.

It has been able to innovate its production cycle and expand its R&D area with new projects by choosing 3ntr 3D printers, after comparing itself with other different technologies and experiencing the advantages and disadvantages of the many options available on the market.

Through the use of 3ntr solutions Fandis has been able to increase from the first installation both the final production and the R&D phase for studying new products and modifying existing ones.

In 2007, Fandis invested several resources in purchasing a first 3D printer from one of the best-known manufacturers on the high-end market, limited, however, to the use of ABS only. This limitation required several additional costs for the labor needed to process and resin the artifacts, so the machine was used sparingly and only when strictly necessary to validate theoretical data.  After 10 years and several costly repairs, the 3D printer stopped working, and the company therefore found itself having to shelve the business.

However, thanks to the rapid evolution of additive technologies, Fandis decided to take the path again, driven by the opportunities on tax breaks that SMEs benefit from under the new “Industry 4.0” scenario. The company evaluated several solutions, however, clashing with excessive costs on the one hand and poor guarantees on the other: top-of-the-line products with too high prices versus low quality “home made” manufacturers.

The decision to rely on 3ntr began based on price scales that were in the mid-range, looking for a company that combined quality in line with Fandis products with a low maintenance cost.

The choice of Fandis to purchase an A4v4 printer from 3ntr came after touching the quality of the machines by seeing them in live operation and having verified how the 3D printers proposed by 3ntr immediately proved to be ideal for the applications, both in terms of quality and maintenance, meeting the requirements of the technical area of Fandis.

Therefore, in relation to the reasons for opting for the 3ntr product, certainly as the first data should be considered the versatility interpreted according to the following definitions:

  • Customization of quality of the part by means of parameterization. The system allows the printing parameters to be set according to the needs of the part and the designer by giving it more or less importance depending on whether it is an aesthetic or structural element.
  • Use of different types of material: the use of plastic material is very diverse and constantly changing.

Fandis has also been able to produce numerous projections to aid product assembly lines using 3ntr printers. An example is shown in the figures illustrating joints, a stand, and a part conveyor produced for an assembly line.

In terms of new projects, two products in particular have been produced, both of which are still under development.

A DC engine housing: the project involved the fabrication of a housing to contain a DC engine that would allow good resistance to both high and low temperatures and meet the requirement for IP65 enclosure protection.

In the absence of a tool such as the 3ntr machine, Fandis would have been induced to go outside for the fabrication of the various components at significantly higher costs than those incurred by having the 3D printer in house.

The fabrication of the engine casings allowed all the tests required by the relevant standards to be carried out and at the same time to see the enormous benefits in using materials that most closely matched those of actual production. The samples made, in ABS, allowed the design to be implemented and the product to be optimized to the maximum.

It started with modeling the housing with a view to production using the injection molding process. Once the parts were made, the first samples were molded using the 3ntr machine. Following the assembly of all mechanical parts and small parts, the next step was the water resistance and temperature testing. Despite the success of the first of the two tests, the high-temperature test prompted the revision of the casing and the subsequent remaking of the sample to optimize its characteristics. These implementations and the resulting practical test resulted in a targeted product according to the requirements of the target market.

Currently, the project is still under development as the samples themselves are being verified by a third party for the purpose of obtaining CE marking and UL approval requirements.

Another project that has solved significant problems from the time-to-market point of view concerns some projections for the realization of the Sensis device: an IoT device for monitoring the “health” of the electrical panel.

The fabrication of the samples using a 3ntr 3D printer made it possible to prepare the first products for presentation at trade shows in a short time. Although in an embryonic state, the fabrication of the casings from ABS material allowed the product to be presented in record time.

Ultimately, the machine proved to be an excellent investment for Fandis as an aid to both production and design by achieving several benefits, such as:

  • realization of functional prototypes that would allow clear and comprehensive display of projects in progress aimed at the sales department;
  • reduction of time to market for ex-novo products;
  • reasibility of application in the target market;
  • reduction of risks associated with investment on possible molds;
  • reduction and, in some cases, exclusion of costs for manufacturing equipment otherwise performed on the shop floor using conventional methods (Milling machines, lathes, machine tools)
