Passion for 3D printing becomes a job in the automotive field thanks to 3ntr

Thanks to 3ntr’s A2V4 printer, Filippo Predebon has started a 3D printing service business. Excellent results, particularly in the automotive sector, for the creation of new parts or for the restoration of iconic vehicles such as the DeLorean from “Back to the Future” movie.

The construction of automotive parts is an activity that goes well with 3D printing technology. Not only to create prototypes, but also to reconstruct parts on historic vehicles or add features not initially foreseen on the vehicles. This was the starting point of the activity of A3ds, a company founded in 2023 by Filippo Predebon. “I have always had a passion for the construction of mechanical parts. When I discovered how additive manufacturing could help in this sense, I combined everything by transforming my passion into a job. I fell in love with this production process, which greatly simplifies the construction of even complex components and reduces costs”, says the Italian entrepreneur, also specialized in large-format creations.

Choosing the right 3D printer

The first step for Filippo Predebon was choosing the right 3D printer to meet his needs. “The first step to take to open a 3D printing service is to identify the most suitable printer,” continues Predebon: “I then evaluated the offer on the market, considering factors such as the manufacturer’s brand, the quality of the pieces made and the print size. The machine that in my opinion optimally satisfies all these requirements is the A2V4 by 3ntr”.

A2V4 is a 3D printer that boasts a worktable of 600×325 mm and a printing height of 500 mm. It is made with sturdy stainless steel sheets and high-resistance components to work even 24/7. “The working volume is a critical factor in the world of 3D printing, because it is what allows you to perform monobloc jobs in large dimensions, or many small identical parts, in a single printing process and the A2V4 is perfect for this. Another advantage that I found in using this 3ntr 3D printer is the variety of materials that can be used. I mainly print with ASA, but I am also asked for PETG and ABS: by changing only the printing parameters I can thus switch from one material to another easily and quickly, without physically intervening on the machine”.

3D printing at the service of historic cars

If you ask a film enthusiast what detail from the “Back to the Future” movie has stuck with him, you will get only one answer: the DeLorean! A car that has also enjoyed great success among collectors, such as the many enthusiasts who join the Italian DeLorean Club. “The ones available on the market today almost all come from the United States, so they have a license plate holder that is not suitable for the European market,” explains Predebon:

Invited by the Club, I designed and created a special license plate holder approximately 550 mm long in ASA: a complex material to print, which however the A2V4 managed without problems. The result is a unique piece of its kind, because it combines resistance and lightness”.

Another detail for the DeLorean created by A3ds with the 3ntr printer is an air deflector, now unobtainable. “Having been designed more than 40 years ago, this car has some weaknesses. For example, in the summer the engine heats up a lot and the air conditioning is unable to eliminate all the heat that accumulates in the passenger compartment. For this reason, at the time a deflector was available designed to facilitate air exchange. Since it is practically impossible to find today, I reconstructed it starting from photos and technical data and then printed it again in ASA. The geometry of the component is quite complex, but thanks also to the software that 3ntr provides together with its machines, it was not difficult to process the file correctly.”

From DeLorean to campers, endless 3D printing possibilities

By broadening the application area, 3D printing continues to provide interesting possibilities for A3ds: for example, the construction of a Starlink antenna adapter to be installed on campers. A detail of generous dimensions (almost 600×300 mm), which A2V4 created in a single piece.

Again for the world of campers, Predebon has created a plastic profile that replaces an old aluminum spare part. The detail, 2 meters long, was printed in just four parts and subsequently assembled with precision thanks to the printing quality of the A2V4.

Satisfaction also came from the agricultural machinery sector.

Following the failure of a no longer available component of a machine’s water recirculation pump, it was necessary to reproduce it in 3D. The material used was PPS, a very complex technopolymer to print, because it requires quite high temperatures of both the printing chamber and the nozzles. Being among those supported by 3ntr, even in this case I had no difficulty in creating the necessary part at a fraction of the cost of the original, with great satisfaction on the part of the owner of the vehicle”.

Details that make the difference

The possibility of replacing the nozzles is another factor that contributed to A3ds’ choice of the A2V4. Going from a nozzle with a diameter of 0.4 to one of 0.6 means significantly speeding up the printing process while still maintaining high overall quality on the piece.

Finally, Predebon also appreciated its repeatability:

So far I have not printed very large batches, but when I made several identical pieces I noticed excellent dimensional repeatability and great homogeneity in the quality of the finish”.
