The Context: UNIBoAT and the Energy Boat Challenge

University competitions are the testing ground where theoretical engineering meets the reality of the racecourse. UNIBoAT (University of Bologna Argonauts Team) is the excellence of the University of Bologna that designs and builds zero-emission boats. The team, already a winner in the “Energy Class” category from 2021 to 2023, presented itself at the Energy Boat Challenge in Monaco with a clear objective: to optimize every single component for maximum energy efficiency, exploiting a hybrid hydrogen-electric propulsion system.

The Challenge: Complex Hydrodynamics and Zero Tolerances

In a nautical competition, the propeller is the heart of performance. The UNIBoAT team designed advanced hydrodynamic profiles, characterized by extremely thin leading edges. The need was not only aesthetic, but structural: to obtain functional components capable of withstanding real hydrodynamic loads. Standard prototyping solutions did not guarantee the combination of dimensional precision and mechanical strength required in such tight timeframes.

The Solution: The Power of 3ntr Technology

3ntr stepped in by deploying the solidity of its integrated solution. The difference was made by the perfect calibration between the printer and the proprietary technical materials. After an initial testing phase, the need for superior performance emerged. Thanks to the vast range of technical polymers engineered by 3ntr, the switch to production in npCarbon (Carbon-loaded Nylon) was immediate and risk-free. It was not a simple attempt, but a controlled process where software, machine, and material worked in unison to guarantee the result.

Results: From File to Race Component in 10 Days

The time factor was critical. In about ten days, the 3ntr solution allowed for the production and delivery of not just simple prototypes, but ready-to-use components (End-Use Parts). The reliability of the printing process eliminated uncertainties: critical geometries were faithfully reproduced on the first try, allowing the team to focus on water tests instead of component troubleshooting.

Competitive Advantage

The npCarbon propellers demonstrated excellent performance, racing successfully and contributing to the jury’s honorable mention for the project. This case study confirms that when choosing a complete industrial partner like 3ntr, Additive Manufacturing becomes a strategic lever to accelerate innovation without compromises on quality.

“To obtain the best performance in water, that geometry was fundamental for us. 3ntr proved to be extremely proactive by realizing the propellers in npCarbon. The result was satisfactory from every point of view.”
